Chef’s Academy Cook Off Held For Scholarship
For high school students drawn to the heat and sizzle of the kitchen, The Chef’s Academy, culinary division of Harrison College, has a competition that is sure to inspire a future top chef.
The Chef’s Academy is launching the 2013 Top Teen Talent Scholarship Competition, an event for juniors and seniors in high school who wish to demonstrate their cooking talents and study the culinary arts. The winner of this fun, yet competitive talent competition will receive a full tuition scholarship to study at The Chef’s Academy at either the Indiana or North Carolina campus.
Students who wish to enter must first select the category in which they would like to compete: culinary arts or pastry arts. They must also complete a scholarship application on The Chef’s Academy website, which includes an essay and recipe submission, as well as photos of their culinary or pastry creation.
Entries must be submitted by Monday, April 8, at which point the submissions will be posted on The Chef’s Academy Facebook page for the public’s vote. Public voting will end at 12 a.m. Eastern Time, Monday, May 13. Students with the top five most popular submissions in each category will advance to the second phase of the competition.
Phase two finalists will compete in a Top Chef-style cook-off competition held at The Chef’s Academy’s Morrisville Campus, located at 2001 Carrington Mill Blvd., Morrisville, N.C., on June 15. Here they will prepare a menu issued in advance by The Chef’s Academy. A judging panel of local professionals and culinary instructors will determine the winners.
The first place recipient will receive a full tuition scholarship to attend The Chef’s Academy for his or her desired program. Second place finalist will receive a $5,000 scholarship towards his or her tuition and the remaining eight finalists will each receive $1,000 scholarships.
“We are very proud of The Chef’s Academy outstanding reputation to produce top-notch culinary experts,” said Ryon Kaopuiki, campus president of The Chef’s Academy. “We are looking forward to discovering a new wave of talented culinary students through this exciting competition who will represent the future of our industry.”
A scholarship applicant is limited to submitting an application in one category only. Essays will run a maximum of 300 words stating why the applicant would like to study his or her program of choice at The Chef’s Academy. Only one vote is allowed per person on The Chef’s Academy Facebook page for the competition. Students and their supporters, including instructors, friends and family, will need to become a “fan” of the Facebook page in order to vote in the competition.
Selected finalists will be responsible for all costs and expenses associated with participating in the June 15 competition, including, but not limited to, travel to and from Morrisville, N.C. A student’s high school instructor may accompany the entrant and serve as a “coach” for the competition but is not allowed to participate in any other fashion during the event. Each student will be required to bring his or her own personal knife kit and accessories. All small wares and large utensils will be provided by The Chef’s Academy.
Scoring for the competition will include a brief five minute interview with each entrant by three industry professionals, who will facilitate a conversation about college readiness and career commitment by each competitor.
