John Wesley Anglin
John Wesley Anglin, 89, of Leesburg, Ind., passed away at 12:40 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw, Ind.
He was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Leesburg to Frederick Joseph and Nellie Mae (Roberts) Anglin. He graduated from Leesburg High School in 1942 where he played basketball all four years. He attended Manchester College in 1948 before entering Indiana College of Mortuary Science in Indianapolis. He graduated as a funeral director and embalmer in 1950.
John entered the United States Army Air Corps on Oct. 9, 1945, in Lowry Field, Colorado; served during World War II as a Flight Engineer/Crew Chief for 6 years on B-17 and B-24 Bombers; served in Germany for 3 years. Sgt. John W. Anglin was honorably discharged after his second tour of duty April 28, 1948, at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
He moved to South Bend, Ind., in the early 1950s and then back to Leesburg in 1962. He married Norma J. Murphy on March 8, 1952, in South Bend.
John was funeral director and embalmer for Welsheimer and Hickey Funeral Homes and later, during his retirement years, was employed by Titus Funeral Home.
In 1952 he entered the claims side of the insurance business with a total of 36 years in claims service upon his retirement; began his insurance career as a claims adjuster for Western Adjustment, Aetna Insurance and claims manager for Westfield Insurance Companies in South Bend. He retired from Westfield Insurance Companies after 20 years as claims manager. He owned a bulk milk route after retirement and also was a claims representative for Farmers Mutual Relief Association before full retirement in 1986.
John and his wife, Norma, were instrumental in organizing Cardinal Center for services to the handicapped. He was a lifetime member of Milford Lodge #148 since 1949; Scottish Rite of South Bend since 1952; member, past board member, trustee and an usher for many years at Leesburg United Methodist Church; president of the South Bend Insurance Adjusters Association in 1961; member of the American Legion Post #49; blood donor for the American Red Cross and helped Norma establish and transport Amish volunteers and donors for 5 years to and from blood mobiles.
He is survived by three daughters: Deborah Anglin, Warsaw; Denise Bronsing, Warsaw; and Diane (Bruce) Gescheidle, Holiday, Fla.; five grandchildren: Bryan Bronsing, Warsaw; Lori (Roman) Martinez, Bedford, Ind.; Beth (Brack) Thomas, Wilmington, Del.; Lisa Gescheidle, Holiday, Fla.; and Sarah (John) Nice, Land O Lakes, Fla.; four great-granddaughters: Alexys, Madelyn, Lexus and Isabella; and four great-grandsons: Jordan, Elias, Christopher and Max.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Marshall Wayne Anglin and Herman “Wimpy” Fredrick Anglin.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, March 11, in Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the funeral home. Pastor Don Greulich will officiate. Burial will follow in Leesburg Cemetery. Military honors will be by Warsaw’s American Legion Post #49 and VFW Post #1126.
