Memorial Steamrolls Warrior Wrestlers
ELKHART — Memorial flexed its muscle on the wrestling mat Thursday night, pinning Wawasee eight times in a 60-16 win.
The Chargers, which move to 5-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference with its only loss to Plymouth, started the night with back-to-back pins from Nick Vaughn and Chris Morris over Michael Pena and Jake Sumpter.
Kain Jenkins and Tony Vaughn would both post pins in the first minute for the Chargers, with Jenkins taking care of Devann Lilly in 39 seconds and Vaughn 29 seconds over Tristan Ponsler.
Also scoring pins for Memorial were Kody Gerger over Rodrigo Hernandez, Tyler Weisweaver over Harvey Lopez, Jermel Moody-Newton against Ronny Shortt and Phillip Mathiak on Julian Hernandez. Nick Ritchie was a 6-2 winner over Stephen Possell and Tieshawn Johnson outlasted Brian Clark 11-5.
Wawasee had three mat wins, with Nick Rozow taking out Jon Osorigwith 14-0, Chad Eppley pinning Caleb Noel in 19 seconds and Doug Corl pinning Ronnie Longbrake in 36 seconds.
Memorial took six points with Wawasee’s forfeiture of the 106-pound class.
Wawasee had a pair of JV competitors pick up wins against Memorial, with Logan Bowers at 132-pounds win 10-9 against Ryan Lawler and 152-pounder Zach Ford score a fall at 2:53 against Derico Wyrick. Memorial took the JV scoring 13-9.
The Warriors fall to 11-15 overall and 2-5 in the conference. Memorial still has one NLC dual left with Northridge next Tuesday before both clubs head to the NLC Championships on Jan. 19 at Wawasee. Memorial have won 11 consecutive NLC titles, but Plymouth defeated Memorial head-to-head on Jan. 3 and ran the round robin undefeated at 7-0.
