WINONA LAKE – A strong finish helped the Lakeland Christian Academy boys basketball team post a victory Tuesday night.
The host Cougars outscored the Benton Bucks homeschool team 22-14 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 56-51 win.
LCA closed the game with a 9-0 run in the final minute to pull out the victory. Chris Silveus hit a huge 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to pull the Cougars within 51-50. Collin Price then hit six clutch free throws down the stretch to give LCA the win.
LCA led 11-9 after the opening period before trailing 22-20 at halftime and 37-34 after the third quarter before coming up with a big final frame.
The Cougars took care of the basketball with just 11 turnovers, while the Bucks had 28 miscues. Benton kept it close with a big rebounding advantage.
Silveus and Price each scored 11 points to pace the Cougars, who improved to 2-4 and also snapped a four-game losing streak.
Calvin Prinsen had 10 points and six rebounds for the winners. Zarek Finley scored seven points, while Chris Maron had six and Logan Mount added five.
Samuel Wilson led Benton with 19 points to go with 21 rebounds.
LCA plays Elkhart Christian Saturday at 10 a.m. in the opening game of the Bethany Christian Tournament. The host Bruins then play South Bend Trinity.
