UPDATE: Cromwell Teen Killed By Train
A Cromwell teen is dead after being struck by a train east of Syracuse and officials are now saying it was a suicide.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office are currently working the investigation. A approximately 2:40 a.m., the teenager was walking along the CSX railroad tracks on the east side of Lake Wawasee when she reportedly walked in front of the train.
The victim, identified as Kalee Nicole Skaggs, 15, of Cromwell, was a freshman at Wawasee High School.
Michael Wilson of the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office, pronounced Skaggs dead at the scene from blunt force trauma.
Sources tell StaceyPageOnline.com that Skaggs was the girlfriend of Shawn Michael Leins, 18, who was found dead in his Cromwell home on Oct. 12. According to the teen’s Facebook page, she had been distraught since her boyfriend’s death.
Counselors have been called in to Wawasee High School to help students who are today trying to deal with the loss of their friend and classmate.
The victim was struck in an area between Lake Wawasee and Cromwell near the Kosciusko/Noble County Line Road.
Counselors are expected to remain at WHS throughout the week to help any student through the grieving process and to try to help them cope with the tragedy.
