Athene Gawthrop
Athene Gawthrop, 92, of Leesburg, Ind., and formerly of Glen Ellyn, Ill., passed away on July 10, 2012, at the IU Goshen Hospital.
She was born on April 24, 1920, in Battle Creek, Mich., to Peter and Grace (Pappas) Klemos. She attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. On Sept. 18, 1948, she married Herbert V. Gawthrop Jr. who preceded her in death.
She worked at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in the 1940’s as a dental assistant. She was a homemaker and was active in the Kosciusko County Historical Society. She was an active member of the All Saints Episcopal Church, Altar Guild, Daughters of the King. She was also a member of the Warsaw Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Gawthrop is survived by her daughter: Patricia Gawthrop-Appenzeller, Syracuse, Ind.; her son: Peter Gawthrop, Syracuse; two granddaughters: Mandy Stone, Elkhart, Ind.; and Sarah Appenzeller-Lancaster, Syracuse; three great-grandsons: Kyle, Colin and Mason; two sisters: Miriam Nowlin, Leesburg; and Cleo Van Patten, Milford.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a son: Victor Gawthrop.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at the All Saints Episcopal Church with Father Larry Biller officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to either All Saints Episcopal Church or the Kosciusko County Home Health Care & Hospice.
