MMA Fighter Sought For Battery
Update: as of 5-22-12 Victim of bar fight still serious
A fight outside of Rex’s Rendezvous has left a 28-year-old man in serious condition.
According to Warsaw Police, Nicholas S. Phillips of Warsaw suffered facial and head injuries after being struck by Joe Garrett Swanson, 28, also of Warsaw. Police say the two were involved in a fight early this morning outside of the downtown bar.
Two Warsaw Police Officers were called to the scene at 1:25 a.m. today. As both officers approached, they saw Swanson strike Phillips in the head. When attempting to detain all individuals involved, Swanson fled the scene on foot. He later called the WPD and spoke with an officer but refused to return.
Swanson is known to authorities and reportedly was previously involved in Mixed Martial Arts fighting, often known as cage fighting.
A third person involved in the incident, Ryan Paul Schultz, 26, Warsaw, was arrested at the scene and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct.
Because of the serious nature of Phillips’ injuries and Swanson’s background in professional fighting, charges of aggravated battery are being pursued with the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s office this morning. Police are also requesting a warrant for Swanson’s arrest.
