Read MoreSYRACUSE—The Friends of the Syracuse Public Library will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, to discuss its bag of books sale, slated from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in the library’s meeting room. The sale will feature numerous antique books, which will be specially priced. Attendees can also purchase Friends of the Library bags to stuff for only $5; the antique books are excluded from the stuff-a-bag deal.

Non-native and invasive trees will be looked at during the hour walk around the Syracuse Public Library. These non-natives will be compared with native trees, which benefit bees, insects and birds while creating a regenerative environment.

Bingo cards can be picked up at the library or downloaded from Facebook. The cards feature library-themed actions to be completed in each square, such as join a book club, post a selfie with your library card, borrow a graphic novel and so on.

Subjects will rotate each week, with planned topics including music, science, cardboard engineering, art and history. The focus of the program is hands-on and interactive learning. September’s tentative schedule is music Sept. 10 and solar cooking Sept. 17, weather permitting. On Sept. 24, the library will welcome special guest Terry Trimmer, who will give a presentation on the Revolutionary War.

Bring your own original work or come to listen at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, in the library’s downstairs meeting room. Each participating writer will have a five-minute limit. During past open mic nights, there has always been a good selection of pieces. Light refreshments will also be provided.

The film will be “The Gruffalo,” and refreshments will be served during it. At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, children can swing by the library for storytime. Storytimes will also be returning to Lakeside Park at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 15; this partnership between the library and Syracuse Parks and Recreation will continue each Thursday in July. Finally, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 16, children will be making marshmallow catapults.
