AKRON — With beauty queens of all ages, political candidates, several different car clubs, antique tractors and fire trucks with their sirens blaring, Akron welcomed the Fourth of July with a parade this morning, Monday, July 4, at 11 a.m.. This year’s theme was “Mayberry-USA.”
The weather could not have been more perfect with clear blue skies, a nice breeze with temps somewhere in the 80s.
Residents lined the streets well before the 11 a.m. start time to make sure they had a good view of the parade. Kiddos were also looking for prime locations to pick up the candy that was thrown by many of those participating in the parade.
The honor of parade marshall was given to Jim Bucher, posthumously. Bucher was was well known for making his rounds through Akron on his blue golf cart greeting others. He died in February at age 85. The Grand Marshall’s float was crowded with Bucher’s family and friends who appeared to be having a great time throwing candy to the kids.
The fun continues with food and retail vendors will be available in Pike Memorial Park from noon -10 p.m.. The 3-on3 basketball tournament will continue throughout the afternoon. Games are played at the Pike Memorial Park outdoor courts. The band Ain’t Ryte” will take the stage and perform from 7-10 p.m. followed by fireworks.
