WARSAW — Art Brown has resigned from his position on the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents, citing conflicts with his work schedule.
This was announced at the board’s meeting on Thursday, June 9.
Dave Baumgartner, who previously served on the Board of Regents through March 2019, is replacing Brown, who had served on the Board since 2014.
Brown will be presented with a plaque in recognition of his years of service.
In another matter, the board voted to approve a request by a couple who would like to put up a two-crypt mausoleum, which will be stacked rather than side by side. The couple own two lots and will purchase four additional lots for the mausoleum to be placed on.
Cemetery Sexton Hal Heagy asked for comments or concerns from board members last month, as this has never been done in the newer section of the cemetery.
Heagy brought a drawing of the proposed structure to the meeting Thursday. He told the Board it will not be a problem to mow and work around the structure and said it would not block any other headstones.
“This is the first one of this style in my cemetery,” Heagy said. “I look at it as adding character to the cemetery.”
Board President Ken Locke said they had a good turnout for the Memorial Day ceremony held at the cemetery May 30.
Members of Young Tigers Football spent a Saturday at the cemetery placing flags at veterans’ headstones prior to Memorial Day. Heagy and Board members expressed appreciation for Young Tigers Football coming out each year to place the flags.
In other news:
- Repair work has been completed on the damaged fence behind the cemetery office.
- Preparations are being made to set sturdier military flag poles that will withstand winds of up to 125 mph in the #3 Legion Circle. Heagy said there is money in the budget for a wall to be put up around this area next year.
- The cemetery storage building is framed and ready for metal siding.
- The #3 Cremation Garden will be expanding another 109 lots.
- The next regular meeting will be 5 p.m. July 7.
