Death of New Paris Woman Ruled A Homicide

SOUTH BEND — Alexis Morales, 27, who police confirmed was residing in New Paris when she was reported missing on April 18, was found dead in her vehicle Tuesday, April 19.
Her son, Messiah, 5-months-old, was taken to a local hospital reportedly suffering hypothermic injuries. Family members are with the child.
South Bend Police stated on Wednesday, April 20, that the missing person case began when the women’s family reported the pair missing to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office. The Silver Alert was issued Monday, afternoon Tuesday, April 18.
Her vehicle was found in a driveway on a vacant property in the area of 400 South Bendix Street.
The cause of her death was not released. However, police say that it was clear while processing the scene and seeing the woman, it became a homicide scene. An autopsy is scheduled on Morales is scheduled for Friday.
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was notified by family members, that at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, Morales and her son were last seen leaving Kelly Park on Howard Street, South Bend, driving a silver 2006 BMW. A Silver alert was issued on Monday, April 18.
Accounts on social media that police had been made aware of the vehicle’s location prior to the discovery Tuesday, was refuted by police.
Family members of the pair reportedly had spent a week searching for them.
