WARSAW — Eight Edgewood Middle School students are advancing to the National History Day state competition.

Students entering the NHD contest can choose to enter as an individual or as a group. There are five categories: paper, performance, documentary, exhibit, and website. Students develop a thesis and use primary and secondary sources to support their argument. All students write a process paper of 500 words or fewer, and answer questions on how they chose their topic, how it related to the theme, how they created their project, how they conducted research, and how their topic was significant in history.

Each year, National History Day frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chose for broad application to world, national, or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. The 2021-22 theme is “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.”

All contests this year were conducted virtually. Unlike in previous years, there were no interview portions for the contest. Despite these necessary, temporary shifts, Edgewood Middle School students excelled again.

Moving on from Edgewood Middle School to the Indiana NHD state competition are:

• Group Exhibit – Titiksha Gorhe and Eden Metz with “The Little New Deal: A Diplomatic Event in Indiana”
• Group Exhibit – David Hall, Karthik Peddireddy, and Luke Smith with “Team In The Sea”
• Individual Paper – Claire Temple with “Treaty of Versailles; Helpful or Harmful?”
• Individual Paper – Sara Rosales Cordon with “¡Extra Extra, La Huelga Empieza!” (Extra Extra, The Strike Starts!)
• Individual Performance – Kevin Gough with “The Unfair Treaty of Versailles”

Students will present at the state virtual contest on April 30.
