Man Reports Theft After Meeting Women For Sex; Two Arrested
Staff Report
WARSAW — Two women have been arrested after allegedly stealing items from a man who arranged to have sex with one of them.
Shonta Ebony Henderson, 23, South Bend, is charged with theft, a class A misdemeanor; and sentence enhancement theft, a level 6 felony.
Kamryn R. Griffin, 23, Mishawaka, is charged with theft, a class A misdemeanor.
On Sept. 8, 2021, a Warsaw Police detective was asked to speak with a man about a theft report. The Mishawaka Police Department was investigating a forgery incident in their jurisdiction and had recovered a forged check from the man’s checking account.
The next day, the detective spoke with the man. According to court documents, on Sept. 6, 2021, the man said he had hired a prostitute from South Bend. He said two women with two children arrived at his home and that both women were in his bedroom at some point.
Once the women left his home, the man noticed multiple items were missing. The man told the detective $500 in U.S. currency, a check book, identifying information and house keys were all stolen from his home. He said his bank contacted him when an attempt was made to use his checks.
A Mishawaka Police Department detective provided the Warsaw detective with two lineups of suspects from ongoing investigations. In the first lineup, the man identified Griffin as one of the women at his home. In the second lineup, the man said he believed Henderson was the second woman at his home.
The Mishawaka detective had arrested Henderson and Griffin as robbery suspects, which occurred during a similar prostitution incident.
The Mishawaka detective interviewed Griffin, who confirmed that she and Henderson were in Warsaw during a prostitution transaction on Sept. 6, 2021. Griffin said she was paid in cash and then the man wrote her a $7,000 check. Griffin was confronted with the fact that the writing on the check was not the man’s and that the entire check book was stolen.
Griffin said she didn’t steal the check and was handed it by Henderson on Sept. 8, 2021. Griffin was identified as the person who attempted to cash the check at a bank.
In an interview, Henderson said she didn’t steal the checkbook and that Griffin did while she was with the man. She admitted to writing the check.
Upon searching Griffin’s apartment, the Mishawaka detective found the man’s checkbook and personal documents.
Henderson was previously convicted of conversion in St. Joseph County. At the time of this case, she was released on bond on a pending armed robbery charge.
Henderson was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on Feb. 16, with a $5,500 surety and cash bond. Griffin has a pretrial conference at 1 p.m. March 9, in Kosciusko Superior Court Two.
