Elkhart County Crash On Indiana Toll Road Claims Two Lives

ELKHART — Indiana State Police are investigating a vehicle accident on the Indiana Toll Road in which two people died.
Around 1:04 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, Indiana State Police Dispatch received calls of a crash between two semis on the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker 90.5. This is about a mile and a half west of Elkhart exit 92.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Samuel Waterhouse shows that a 2013 International semi was traveling west when, for an unknown reason, it crossed the center median and entered the eastbound lanes. As the International was crossing the eastbound lanes, a semi traveling east struck the trailer of the International. This semi caught on fire and became fully engulfed.
The driver of the International was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the second semi involved was pronounced deceased at the scene.
East and west lanes were shutdown for the crash investigation and removal of the vehicles. Westbound lanes opened around 2:30 a.m. Eastbound lanes opened around 6:20 a.m.
Identities of the deceased are being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin. This is an ongoing investigation.
