SYRACUSE — A dinner and silent auction to benefit the Andy Kryder Memorial Scholarship will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the North Webster Community Center.
The night will be a time of remembering and fun for all who knew Kryder. Dinner will be catered by Chubbie’s Pub-n-Grub. The evening will conclude with announcements of silent auction winners. The silent auction is being conducted via Facebook with items listed on the event page. The auction will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, and conclude at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. There are many nice things on which to bid that have been donated by various people and establishments throughout the community.
The scholarship was set up through the Kosciusko County Community Foundation to honor Kryder. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to students from Wawasee High School who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Priority is given to graduating seniors who are on the varsity swim team, and second preference is given to graduating seniors pursuing the study of business, honoring Kryder’s investment in the world of business and aquatics.
Kryder, a 1994 graduate of Wawasee High School, died June 25, 2020.
An accomplished swimmer, he was the 1994 state champion in the 100-yard freestyle, and also won the Herman Keller mental attitude award. Kryder still holds four swim records at Wawasee. After graduating high school he continued his education and swim career at Ball State, graduating in 1998. After working in the financial world for many years, he became a business teacher and girls swim team coach at Wawasee, leading the team to the state swim meet in 2020.
Tickets for the dinner are $25 and can be purchased from Eric Schaekel at (260) 740-7017, or paid for through PayPal at www.paypal.com/paypalme/nicoleschaekel. Most of the cost of the dinner will go toward funding the scholarship.
