Mt. Vernon 3, Grace 1
Grace’s volleyball team could not maintain its early lead on Wednesday at Mt. Vernon Nazarene.
The Lady Lancers claimed the opening set on the road, but the Cougars (19-4, 8-3 Crossroads League) bounced back to win the next three sets in a 3-1 win.
Grace played the match short-handed, missing several key members of its rotation.
Despite that disadvantage, Grace still picked up the first-set victory. The teams could scarcely be separated in the first set.
MVNU tried to pull away with three straight points to open up a small lead. The Cougars held that margin and served for the set with the score 24-22.
But Grace stunned the home team with four straight points. Cassadi Colbert, Jenna Mueller and Morgan Syoen earned kills to key Grace’s 26-24 comeback.
After the opening set, Grace struggled to slow down the Cougars’ attack. MVNU racked up 44 kills on just 12 errors across the final three sets.
The Cougars won 25-15, 25-17 and 25-17 to secure the match.
For the match Grace had 43 kills on a .151 percentage, while the Cougars had 61 kills on a .259 percentage.
Colbert and Mueller tied for the team lead with 12 kills, and both players also had a block assist.
Anna Frey had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, and Syoen also had a double-double with 31 assists and 12 digs.
Katie Season had four kills and two block assists, Gina Novotny amassed 23 digs, and Grace Erwin added 10 digs.
The Lady Lancers have the weekend off before a busy week ahead. Next week, Grace will host St. Francis on Wednesday. Two days later, Grace will host the annual Lancer Classic tournament, featuring 16 matches across Friday and Saturday at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
