Tigers Place Fifth In Home Invite
In a long and busy day at the Warsaw Invite, the host Tigers lost in the semis of the winner’s bracket, but dropped to fifth in the ladder.
Warsaw beat Fairfield in two games, but lost 2-1 to Homestead in the winner’s bracket semis. The Spartans would go on to lose to Bishop Dwenger in the championship 25-8, 25-6. In the consolation ladder, Warsaw lost to LaPorte in an eventful 2-1 final, 15-12 in the third game, but rallied to beat Fort Wayne Northrop 2-0 to take fifth place. LaPorte beat Angola in three to take third.
Abbie Porter had 16 digs and 12 aces as part of the Warsaw haul, with Melaina Hawblitzel recording 29 kills, four aces and three blocks, Kaylee Weeks pounding 27 kills to go with five aces and three blocks, Kylie Smith with 43 digs and Avery Hales with 96 assists, 22 digs, four aces and four blocks.
Wawasee Freshman Win Central Noble Title
Wawasee ran 4-0 on the day to claim a trophy at Central Noble.
The Warriors beat West Noble in three and Triton and Columbia City in two to make the final, which saw Wawasee win 25-16, 25-19 over the host Cougars.
Stat leaders for Wawasee included Abby Dusek with 24 aces and 22 assists, Kenzie Hackleman with 39 kills and Natalia Pizana with 25 assists and eight aces.
Taylor 3, Grace 0
Taylor kept moving along in a close match at home with Grace, winning 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 on Saturday.
The Trojans (19-2, 9-1 CL) weathered the storm by breaking a 17-all tie in the first game by scoring six of the next seven points to pull away. Grace led 10-8 in the second set before Taylor came back to take the lead and not give it up the remainder of the frame. Grace would get it within one on three separate occasions, an Alisha Leffring kill staving off the game at 24-23, but a Grace Isaacs kill ended the game and lifted Taylor to a 2-0 lead.
Taylor wouldn’t trail again after Grace took a 3-2 lead in the third, but the game sat tied at 23 after Jenna Mueller pounded home a kill. Taylor would close out the final two points to earn its ninth win of the Crossroads season.
Kacy Bragg led the Trojans with 39 assists, Stephaney Fifield had 28 digs and Sarah Scott had 15 kills. Nikki Parrett added 13 digs.
Cassadi Colbert had 11 kills and three blocks to pace the Lancers (8-10, 3-7 CL), with Leffring adding seven kills and three blocks. Gina Novotny had 15 digs, Morgan Syoen had 20 assists and two aces, and Emily Peterson had eight assists.
