Grace’s volleyball team rebounded with a needed road win on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers topped Goshen 3-1 in Crossroads League play. Jenna Mueller had nine kills, and Katie Swanson had eight kills and three block assists to lead Grace’s attack.
The first set was hotly contested. The score was tied eight times, including several points late in the game.
With the score knotted at 22-22, Alisha Leffring put Grace on top 23-22 with a kill. After a Goshen error, Leffring teamed up with Katie Swanson for a block point to secure the opening set 25-22.
Grace’s offense had nine kills with eight errors in the first set. But Grace’s defense carried the win with Leffring accounting for four block assists.
The Maple Leafs (3-16, 0-8 CL) responded with their best offensive set of the match by far. Goshen had 12 kills with only two errors, leveling the match with a 25-20 win in the second set.
Grace roared back with a dominant third-set performance. Seven straight points gave Grace a massive 16-6 lead, ending with a pair of aces from Emily Peterson. The Lady Lancers (7-9, 2-6 CL) cruised to a 25-13 win, capped off by back-to-back kills from Anna Frey.
Early in the fourth set, strong serving from Grace Erwin gave the Lady Lancers a 6-0 spurt to take the lead for good. Erwin had an ace, and Swanson had a pair of kills during the run.
Goshen was unable to force a fifth set as the Lady Lancers maintained their lead en route to a 25-19 win. Mueller ended the match with a well-placed kill.
Grace was efficient on offense in the fourth set with 11 kills and two errors.
Gina Novotny paced Grace’s defense with 24 digs, and Erwin had 10 digs and two aces.
Frey finished with seven kills and 11 digs, and Leffring had 4 kills, 1 solo block and 4 block assists. Peterson tallied 9 assists, 4 aces and 4 digs, and Morgan Syoen had a team-high 18 assists to go along with six digs.
The Lady Lancers are back home on Friday for a 7 p.m. clash with Spring Arbor.
