WARSAW — A Warsaw man was recently arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle that he claimed was free.
John Jeremy Lee Sutherlin, 30, 1570 Loher Lane, Warsaw, is charged with theft of a vehicle, a level 6 felony.
On Jan. 7, a Warsaw Police officer spoke with a man about a stolen vehicle. The man told the officer he last saw his vehicle at his home on Jan. 6.
According to court documents, the man said the vehicle wouldn’t run and whoever took it would have had to use a trailer.
On Jan. 9, the man contacted Warsaw Police and said someone on social media told him where his vehicle was and that Sutherlin had stolen it. Warsaw officers went to the location and spoke with Sutherlin, who said a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle was at the home.
Sutherlin allegedly said he picked up the vehicle and claimed it had messages written on the windows saying it was free for the taking. Officers saw the vehicle in a garage and noticed the vehicle had writing on the windows. They later determined the writing on the vehicle’s windows was relatively new.
While being interviewed, Sutherlin said he picked up the vehicle early in the morning on Jan. 9. However, the vehicle was taken on Jan. 7. Sutherlin also continued to claim the vehicle had writing on it when he picked it up. During the interview, officers noticed multiple inconsistencies in the story Sutherlin provided.
The man whose vehicle was stolen said he didn’t have any writing on the vehicle and that he wasn’t able to write English that well.
Officers then spoke with the person who reached out to the man via social media about the stolen vehicle. The individual said that on Jan. 7, they saw a truck and trailer driving away with the man’s vehicle. The person said the vehicle had no writing on it at that time.
Sutherlin was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on Aug. 17, with a $5,250 surety and cash bond.
