Sammy L. Prater, 74, Syracuse, passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021. Sammy was born in Sparta, Tenn. Nov. 20, 1946. He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1965. Sam started his work career at Dana Corp. in Hagerstown and transferred in Syracuse retiring after 36 years. After retirement Sam was the smiling face that you would see at the North Webster Dollar General Store, and later at the Rise and Roll in Warsaw.
Sam was a hard working man that was always willing to help when needed. His greatest love was family. He loved nothing more than to be surrounded by family for a big meal. He had a strong faith in God and wanted his legacy to be for his Grandchildren to have a strong belief in God.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Nannie, his two children Sammy Jr. (Tonya) of New Paris; Tammy (Todd) Taylor of Decatur; stepchildren: Kyle Centers of Kentucky, and Penny (Michael) West of Pierceton; his brothers: Floyd (Joani) Poss of Stanton, Mich.; Homer (Gladys) Poss of Greenville, Mich.; and Jeff (Christine) Poss of Florida; sisters: Annie Jones of New Castle; Donna (Tim) Sloat of Evansville; and Jeanetta Malkemus of New Castle. Sam was also blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents: Harrison and Thelma Poss, and a brother Jerry Prater.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at the Eastlund Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Syracuse Cemetery.
