Eugene Coverstone
Eugene Coverstone, 93, Pierceton, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at Parkview Whitley Hospital. Born Dec. 26, 1927, at home in Wolf Lake, he was the son of Earl C. and Vesta (Fry) Coverstone.
He grew up in rural Etna on his family’s farm and graduated from South Whitley High School and served in the U.S. Army Reserve. On Sept. 12, 1952, he married Jean Grover. For over 40 years, Gene worked for Dekko and retired as a Group President. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Cardinal Center. After retirement he stayed busy restoring old tractors, helped operate North Webster Drive Range with his son Steve, golfed and enjoyed gardening. After the passing of his first wife, he married Carol Rhodes on June 13, 1998.
Gene was an amazing man who was hardworking, and outgoing. He loved his grandchildren, telling stories and jokes, and having coffee with his friends. After Carol passed, Gene found happiness again with his companionship with Kay Slone for the past 20 years. Over the years he was a member of the North Webster United Methodist Church and a life long member of the North Webster American Legion.
Other survivors include his sons, Steve (Laura) Coverstone, Scott (Kathy) Coverstone and Stu (Jan) Coverstone; daughter, Amy (Jon) Angel; sister, Bonnie Martin; brothers, Don (Sharon) Coverstone and Ken (Rita) Coverstone; sister-in-law Jean Coverstone; Kay’s children; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Aside from his parents and both wives, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Hal Eugene Coverstone; his brothers, Earl “Skip” Coverstone and Dean Coverstone; and sister, Doris Coverstone.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, July 19, at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City and 9-10 a.m., Tuesday. A graveside service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam with Funeral Celebrant Sharon Brockhaus officiating.
Memorial donations may be given in memory to the American Cancer Society.
