John Paul Mattes, 56, Columbia City, passed away on July 9, 2021, at Parkview Hospital.
He was born in Fort Wayne on Oct. 11, 1964, to the late James and Helen (Pogozelski) Mattes. He spent his formative years in Allen County, graduating from Heritage High School in 1983. As he continued to grow in his career, he received a degree from Ivy Tech and two from Purdue University Fort Wayne.
John was married to Julie Reed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Uniondale, on April 24, 1993.
He had worked as an associate engineer at Fort Wayne Metals since 2010.
John was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lake Township. He served as a past council president and with the Stephen Ministry.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially camping and working on muscle cars.
John is survived by his wife of 28 years, Julie Mattes; two sons, Jacob (Jocelyn) Mattes and Joshua (Cortney Magers) Mattes; his daughter, Jessica Mattes; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Joyce Reed; his four brothers, Edward Mattes, Walter (Jyl) Mattes, Michael (Donna) Mattes and Robert (Tina) Mattes; his nieces and nephews, Joseph (Kelly) Mattes, Raymond Mattes, Megan (Damian) Hayes, Nicholas Mattes, Tiffany (Nicholas) Munro, and Robert (Margaret) Esquivel; and two great-nephews and a great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
His funeral service will take place at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lake Township, on Wednesday, July 14, at 11 a.m. with calling one hour prior to the service. The family will also receive friends at the church, on Tuesday, July 13, from 3-8 p.m. The burial will take place at Eel River Cemetery, Churubusco.
