WARSAW — A Warsaw man was recently arrested after allegedly molesting and recording a child in states of undress.
Devan Mikel Adams, 31, 426 W. Main St., Warsaw, is charged with child molesting, a level 4 felony; and two counts of attempted child exploitation, both level 5 felonies.
On June 29, a Warsaw Police Officer responded to a report of a teenager in need of assistance. The teen told the officer that earlier in the morning, Adams came into their room and told them to wake up and get dressed.
According to court documents, the teen said they noticed Adams was moving items near their bookcase. Later, the teen noticed Adams’ cellphone was propped up on their bookcase and hidden behind other books. The phone was pointed into a room they were changing clothes in. The teen said when they found the phone, they got dressed and immediately left the home. They told the officer they believed the phone was placed in their room to secretly record them.
The teen said in 2017 and 2018, their parents made them cuddle with them naked in a living room. While being interviewed by Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center staff, the teen recalled a prior occasion in 2020 where Adams allegedly concealed his cellphone in a stack of towels in the bathroom. This occurred while the teen was in the shower.
During the interview, the teen said between 2017 and 2018, there were instances where after they took a shower, their parents would say they needed to cuddle with them. The teen said their parents told them they needed to cuddle and they couldn’t put on clothes.
They would be on a couch with Adams when he would place a sheet over them and inappropriately touch them.
Adams spoke with a Warsaw Police detective about what occurred. During the conversation, Adams admitted to secretly placing his cellphone and activating the phone’s camera in the teen’s bedroom on June 29 for the purpose of recording their activity. He initially told the detective he did it solely to find out what they were doing. However, he later admitted that his motivation may also have been to satisfy his sexual desire and to see the teen nude. Adams said he deleted the videos he did have of the teen on his phone that morning prior to meeting with the detective.
Adams also said he recorded the teen getting in and out of the shower.
He was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on June 29, with a $25,500 surety and cash bond.
