Everett ‘Jim’ Metzger
Everett D. “Jim” Metzger, 100, Silver Lake, passed away June 24, 2021, at his home.
He was born in Claypool, on April 25, 1921, to Homer D. and Iva May (Beigh) Metzger. At the age of 6, Jim, his parents and his brother, Eldred, moved into Jim’s current home. Before he and his family moved there, his grandfather owned the farm, which has been family-owned since the early 1900s.
At an early age, Jim learned about work ethic and the meaning of a hard day’s work on his family’s farm. On April 30, 1944, Jim married Ida Kathryn Teeter. To provide for his wife and three sons, he was a self-employed, lifelong dairy farmer in Kosciusko County for over 70 years. Jim relished in his time in the garden, and he especially loved being with his family. While Jim experienced much joy in living a long, healthy life, he also felt the pain that often comes with it. In 1980, Jim and Kathryn lost their son Ted, and on July 5, 1994, Jim lost his wife of 50 years. In 2002 Jim was devastated to lose another child when his son, Timothy, passed away.
Throughout the many joys and sorrows of life, Jim maintained his faith and could be found worshiping at Eel River Community Church of the Brethren in Silver Lake, where he was a member.
The loving memory of Everett D. “Jim” Metzger will be forever cherished by his son, Philip Metzger Sr., Claypool; daughter, Mary Ann (James) Bortz, Perrysburg, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Iva Metzger; wife, Ida Kathryn Metzger; sons, Ted and Timothy Metzger; daughter-in-law, Donna Metzger; brother, Eldred Metzger; and sister-in-law, Louise Metzger.
