WARSAW — A Warsaw man was recently arrested after officers responded to a battery report and discovered more than 20 grams of methamphetamine in a vehicle.
Ryan Michael Kauffman, 39, 1206 N. Riverwood Ranch Road, Warsaw, is charged with dealing in methamphetamine, a level 2 felony; possession of methamphetamine, a level 4 felony; possession of a syringe and domestic battery with a prior conviction, both level 6 felonies; domestic battery, a class A misdemeanor; possession of paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor; and sentence enhancement possession of methamphetamine, a level 3 felony.
Circumstances started to unfold on May 20, when a Warsaw Police officer responded to a report of a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with a woman who said she had been in an altercation with Kauffman. She said the dispute escalated into a physical altercation.
According to court documents, during the incident, Kauffman allegedly grabbed the woman by her wrist. The altercation continued until Kauffman pushed the woman onto a bed and held her down. The woman said Kauffman’s hand was on her collarbone and held her down to the point where she could not lift up her head. The officer noticed the woman had red marks on her wrist and collarbone.
Kauffman admitted to the officer that he had been in an argument with the woman, that he destroyed a laundry basket and that he grabbed the woman’s wrist. He said he grabbed the woman’s wrist to get her to stop throwing items at him. Kauffman also said he chased the woman into a bedroom and grabbed her to stop her. He told the officer the woman scratched him during the incident.
While being placed under arrest, a small bag containing methamphetamine fell from Kauffman’s pocket. Kauffman gave the officer consent to search his vehicle parked at the residence where the battery occurred. A K9 unit made a positive alert of illegal drugs in the vehicle.
Inside the vehicle, police found a backpack containing six bags of methamphetamine, each weighing four grams. He also found two syringes and a smoking device.
A Pierceton Police officer who responded to the scene spoke with Kauffman about the drugs. Kauffman admitted to selling methamphetamine the previous night and to receiving up an ounce of meth in South Bend.
Kauffman was previously convicted of dealing in a controlled substance in August 2011. He was also convicted of battery resulting in serious bodily injury in August 2016.
For this case, Kauffman was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on May 20, with a $25,250 surety and cash bond.
