WINONA LAKE — A mini version of the annual Fat & Skinny Tire Fest took place this weekend, with a Countryside Tour and the DINO Indiana Mountain Bike Series race.
The Kosciusko Countryside Tour began at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 22, near Green Earth Multisport. The DINO Mountain Bike Series race consisted of multiple categories and ran throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
Despite the limited number of events, organizers are glad the festival is taking place this year after making the difficult decision to cancel it in 2020.
Kosciusko County Velo Cycling Club Co-Founder and Board Member Greg Demopoulos spoke about this year’s downsized event.
“Because the size of the event and all the moving parts, we had to make some specific event decisions months ago, not knowing what the county health condition would be, vaccination rates, etc.,” Demopoulos said.
After consulting with the county health department, city officials and sponsors, the decision was made to put on a limited number of events at this year’s festival.
Demopoulos said the 2019 Fat & Skinny Tire Fest had 2,713 participants over a three day period, seven different disciplines and 12 separate events (Critical Mass, Road Racing, Mountain Bike Racing, BMX Racing, Kids events, Casual Tours and Skills Clinics).
“Local police estimates were over 10,000 people, including spectators,” Demopoulos said. “This year, we’re conservatively expecting 300-400 people spread out at three locations, all outdoors.”Organizers are hopeful th 2022 and the return of a full lineup of events.
The Fat & Skinny Tire Fest is promoted by KCV Cycling Club and The Village at Winona.
