WARSAW — A Warsaw woman was arrested for allegedly making fraudulent purchases using her husband’s grandmother’s debit card.
Ashley R. Busenburg, 29, 2702 East CR 225S, Warsaw, is charged with fraud and theft, both level 6 felonies.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Jan. 14, a woman contacted the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a theft from her bank account. The woman said she believed her grandson and his wife, Busenburg, stole the money by using her debit card without her permission.
The woman told officers that her grandson and Busenburg were moving to Florida and had created a Facebook fundraising page to solicit donations, alleging that their accommodations fell through and they were desperate for money. The woman used her debit card to authorize a charge of $85 to Busenburg’s Facebook fundraiser.
Shortly after authorizing the money transfer, there were a number of unauthorized purchases on the debit card.
Upon checking her transaction history, she discovered there were 14 charges from “FB pay Ashley Horn” for a total of $1,366.35 in unauthorized purchases. She noted that at least two of those transactions were made in Florida, and the fundraiser website indicated that both Busenburg and the woman’s grandson were stuck in Florida at that time with no way home.
A deputy reviewed the bank statement and saw the unauthorized transactions. The woman said she was in Kosciusko County when the unauthorized purchases occurred.
Busenburg was booked at the Kosciusko County Jail May 17 on a $4,000 surety and cash bond.
