Eunice Sturgill
Eunice Sturgill, 85, Columbia City, passed away Friday, April 23, 2021, at her home. Born Nov. 6, 1935, in Breathitt County, Ky., she was the daughter of Robert and Ethel (Spencer) Fugate.
Growing up in Boone County, she was the oldest child. She attended Hebron School. Eunice began working as a teenager on her grandfather’s tobacco farm before moving to Chicago to live with her aunt. She would send money home to her parents to help them move to Larwill in 1950. Eunice had lived in Columbia City for over 50 years. She worked for Whitley Memorial Hospital for 42 years while also having a second job at times, including Jimmies Pizza for 12 years and Walmart for 12 years. She also had worked at Lee’s Inn and Kroger.
Eunice had attended New Hope Wesleyan Church. She was giving, caring and loving. Eunice always looked forward to being with her family and attending family reunions. She was an excellent cook and baker.
Survivors include her children, Wanda (Michael) Wachtor, Ellis (Paula) Sturgill, John (Tess) Sturgill, Brenda (Bob) Starkey; brothers, Robert (June) Fugate, Herschel (Sue) Fugate and Galen Fugate; sisters, Christine Keirn, Pat (Keith) Sheets and Darlene (Jim) Sparks; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Seth Conley; sister, Anna Lee Herron; and brother, Paul Fugate.
Visitation will be 11 to 12:45 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. with Pastor Barry Faucett officiating. Burial will take place at South Park Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given in memory to Riley Hospital for Children.
