Joan M. Slocum, 62, Syracuse, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2021, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
She was born on July 17, 1958, in Evergreen Park, Ill., to Lawrence and Beverly Kellett Buletty.
She grew up in the Chicago area and moved to the Syracuse area in the mid-1970s, where she lived most of her life. She attended Mt. Assisi High School in Chicago and graduated in 1976 from Wawasee High School in Syracuse.
She also received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University in Bloomington. She formerly taught elementary school at West Noble and Indianapolis. She was a member of the St. Martin de Porres Catholic Parish, where she also taught Sunday school and was a member of the Women of Today in Syracuse.
She is survived by her daughter, Paige Slocum, of Syracuse; son, Taylor (Tiffany) Slocum, of Syracuse; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 6941 E. Waco Drive, Syracuse, with Fr. Dermot Gahan officiating. Burial will follow in the Syracuse Cemetery.
