NorthWood Boys 76, Tippecanoe Valley 39
NorthWood had an awakening in the second quarter in a blowout of the Vikings at The Pit Wednesday night.
After a modest 16-8 first quarter, NorthWood caught fire in the second quarter to overwhelm the visitors. Cade Brenner had 12 of his game-high 24 in the second as NorthWood scored 32 points in the frame to build a stunning 48-13 lead.
Ian Raasch scored eight of his 14 in the second quarter for the Panthers (10-8), Brock Bontrager had 11 points and Cooper Wiens added 10 points.
Paul Leasure led Valley (6-13) with 14 points, all in the second half, and Dawson Perkins had 11 points.
Grace Women 80, Spring Arbor 72
Grace’s women’s basketball team picked up a much-needed win, topping Spring Arbor 80-72 on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers (12-14) were propelled in the second half by a trio of seniors as Grace raced away for the victory.
Seniors Kyannah Stull, Kamryn Hostetler and Kaylie Warble teamed up to score 39 of the team’s 44 points in the second half. Stull amassed 23 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds, tallying 18 of her points after halftime.
The contest on Wednesday started sloppily with five combined turnovers in the opening minute. Play soon smoothed out as both teams shot the ball well.
Kaylee Patton gave Grace a spark by scoring six of the team’s first eight points. Kate Rulli provided a boost late, scoring five straight points for Grace.
The teams ended the quarter level at 19-19, and the score remained close throughout the second period.
Neither team led by more than three points in the second quarter. Hostetler muscled her way to a layup in the final 30 seconds, lifting the Lady Lancers to a 36-34 lead at halftime.
Grace shot 67 percent from the field in the half and 50 percent on 3-pointers. The Cougars (5-7) made 52 percent of its field goals and outrebounded Grace by four. Patton’s eight points led Grace at the intermission.
The Cougars began to pound the paint in the third quarter and opened up a four-point edge with two minutes remaining in the third.
But Grace caught fire from deep with three consecutive triples to claim momentum. Stull buried two 3-pointers and Hostetler had another to put Grace on top 55-52 entering the last stanza.
Stull and Hostetler scored all 19 points in the third quarter for Grace; Stull tallied 11 with Hostetler adding eight. Fifteen of those 19 points came from beyond the arc.
Grace began to pull away midway into the fourth quarter. Warble made strong cuts in the lane, scoring on three straight plays to give Grace a 68-57 lead and forcing a timeout from SAU.
Hostetler followed that up with a triple as the Lady Lancers led by 12.
The Cougars did their best to rally, trimming Grace’s lead to five with 1:26 on the clock. But Grace made SAU foul down the stretch, icing the game with seven free throws in the closing minutes.
Hostetler finished with 18 points, 13 of which came after halftime. Warble scored eight of her 12 points after halftime.
Patton finished with 11 points, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebounds, and Maddie Ryman added 7 points, 6 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Rulli finished with five points off the bench, and Kenzie McMahon added 2 points, 2 assists and 2 boards.
The Lady Lancers end the regular season on Saturday at Huntington at 1 p.m.
Grace Men 94, Grace Christian 73
Grace’s men’s basketball team extended its winning streak to three with a 94-73 win over Grace Christian on Wednesday.
As they have all season, the Lancers (16-10) enjoyed balanced production in the win. Grace had six players score in double figures, led by 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists from Haden Deaton.
Grace shot 52 percent from the floor, including a sizzling 58 percent in the first half.
The Lancers led from start to finish on Wednesday. At halftime, Grace pulled ahead 43-30.
Deaton had a game-high 12 points before halftime, and Jake Wadding and Frankie Davidson each scored eight. The Lancers had a plus-nine advantage in rebounds.
Grace maintained a double-digit cushion for much of the second half, but the Tigers had one comeback in reserve.
GCU used an 8-2 run to trim Grace’s lead to 62-57 with 10 minutes remaining. The Lancers did not panic and soon had the game out of reach.
A minute later, Grace began a 15-1 surge which effectively ended the game. Davidson scored five points during the run, and Wadding and Deaton each added four.
The Lancers stayed in front by at least 20 points for most of the final minutes, cruising to the 21-point margin of victory.
For the game, Grace had a 47-35 edge in rebounding. The Tigers were held to 37 percent shooting from the field, including a 3-of-19 performance (16 percent) from beyond the arc.
Davidson tallied 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block, and Elijah Malone just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
Wadding had 16 points and five rebounds, and Jakob Gibbs finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists.
Matt Jennings amassed 10 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds, and Cody Holmes tallied seven points.
Grace will end the season at home on Saturday. The Lancers will host Huntington at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The game will have significant ramifications for the Crossroads League. The Lancers can finish anywhere from No. 3-7 in the league standings based on Saturday’s games.
The quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament start Feb. 24 with the No. 1-4 seeds hosting the opening round.
