SYRACUSE — The Syracuse Metropolitan Police Commissioners approved a recommendation to change the parking ordinance regarding the uptown area.
The changes were discussed during the board’s first quarterly meeting held Monday, Feb. 15.
The changes include removing the two-hour parking limit along East and West Main Street in the business district, leaving the no parking between 4-6 a.m. in place for street sweeping and snow removal. They also want to remove the two-hour parking limit in North Huntington Street in the business district while leaving the no parking designation between 4-6 a.m.
Other changes include removing the “no parking between the hours of 4-6 a.m.” from the three municipal parking lots, upper and lower, at East Main and Harrison Street and the West Pearl Street lot.
The ordinance would also remove the first parking spots on East Main, on the north and south sides, as vehicles turn west onto West Main from Huntington Street and move the eastbound stop bar on West Main, white line on roadway, further west in order to allow a larger turning radius for semi-trucks.
The ordinance must be approved by the Syracuse Town Council before it goes into effect.
The commissioners also approved pier rental for this spring and summer. Pier rental will begin on March 1 for those Syracuse residents who do not have lake access. Those with lake access may rent additional pier space beginning March 15. The commissioners were provided with a copy of the registration form and ordinance in case they receive questions.
Syracuse Reserve officers have been brought back and have started their field training, which is riding with a full-time officer. The department has eight reserve officers, seven of who are new and one is female. Four of the reserve officers have been through the country reserve academy.
Syracuse Police Chief Jim Layne will be serving as president for the Indiana Association Chiefs of Police Association for 2021
Layne told the commissioners the new mobile radios the department has purchased should be installed this week, weather permitting. The portable radios the department purchased should also be programmed and delivered as well this week.
The new squad car the department purchased may be delivered sometime in May or June at the latest since the car has not been built yet.
