AMES, Iowa – Looking for an opportunity, Andrew Mevis has been given one.
After three years kicking at Fordham University, Mevis has announced he is transferring to Iowa State University to continue his football kicking career. Mevis will join the Cyclones for the 2021-22 season as a grad transfer, already carrying a decorated résumé from his three years with Fordham.
Mevis earned First Team All-Patriot League honors as a junior in 2019, which followed up a Second Team selection as a sophomore in 2018. In his three years with the Rams, Mevis hit 27 field goals with a long of 54 yards, his makes sitting fifth in program history. He also set program records for punts and punting average in 2018.
While he made his mark as a kicker, that also had him lead the Patriot League in points per game in 2019, Mevis was getting the job done in the classroom, earning Academic Honor Roll all three years at Fordham.
The 2017 Warsaw Community High School graduate left the Tigers as one of the most decorated players in program history. Mevis was an Under Armour All-American, and kicked a field goal in the Under Armour All-American Bowl in 2017. Ranked as one of the top 10 kickers in the country by Kohl’s Kicking, Mevis was also a top-15 punter. While with Warsaw, Mevis made 43-45 extra points and 9-12 field goals as a senior, including a 51-yarder that at the time was the school record.
Mevis will join the kicking ranks at Iowa State this fall, a program that flirted with the College Football Playoff in 2020 and finished ranked No. 10 in the final CFP poll. The Cyclones, a member of the Big 12 Conference, were 9-3 last season and winners of the Fiesta Bowl, defeating Oregon 34-17.
Mevis also moves to a Power 5 conference to join his brother, Harrison, who was one of the top kickers in the country as a freshman at the University of Missouri.
In a statement, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell offered, “We are thrilled to welcome Andrew into our football program this spring. Andrew is a versatile specialist, having started for three seasons as a punter, place kicker and kickoff specialist. He will immediately compete to help our football team continue to reach its full potential. We are grateful for his belief in Iowa State and excited for him to be in Ames.”
Iowa State is scheduled to open its 2021 season Sept. 4 at home against Northern Iowa.
