Triton Girls JV 29, Wawasee 11
Triton and Wawasee played a modified JV contest Wednesday in a matchup to get the two programs a final game before sectionals.
Abbey Viers and Addyson Viers moved down the ranks for Triton and combined to score 21 points.
In the final work for the Warrior JV (5-8), Abbi Burelison scored six points.
Marian Women 78, Grace 59
Grace’s women’s basketball team came up short against No. 5 Marian on Wednesday, falling 78-59.
Grace’s offense sputtered in the opening quarter. The Lady Lancers were held to single digits after turning the ball over six times.
Marian jumped out to a 21-8 lead as Grace shot just 25 percent from the floor. The Lady Lancers scored two points over the final 5:19 of the period.
The Lady Lancers jumped to life in the second quarter. Kyannah Stull led Grace’s charge, starting the rally with six quick points.
Shortly afterward Kaylee Patton buried a triple, Maddie Ryman sank two free throws, and Stull scored another bucket.
Overall, Grace went on a 14-4 run, slicing Marian’s lead down to six and forcing a timeout from the Knights.
But Grace’s momentum ran out soon after. The Knights ended the half on a 15-4 run, claiming a 43-26 lead at halftime.
Stull led all players with 13 points in the half, shooting 5 of 7 from the field. Grace shot just 36 percent as a team compared to 49 percent for Marian.
Grace found its fire again to open the third period. The Lady Lancers scored the first eight points of the period, capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers by Ryman and Kaylie Warble.
Three minutes later, Ryman went on a 5-0 run by herself. Grace trailed by just five at 49-44, forcing another timeout by Marian.
But similar to the first two quarters, the Lady Lancers struggled to end the quarter. Marian enjoyed an 11-3 spurt over the final three minutes of the third period and took a 13-point cushion into the fourth quarter.
Grace struggled to make a dent in Marian’s lead during the fourth quarter, falling to the fifth-ranked Knights.
The Knights shot 46 percent from the floor and 39 percent from the 3-point line, and the Lady Lancers shot 37 percent from the floor and 33 percent on 3s. Marian had a 42-18 edge in points in the paint.
Stull scored 17 points to go along with three rebounds and one blocked shot. Ryman scored 12 points with three steals.
Patton stuffed the stat sheet with 8 points, 11 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals and 1 blocked shot, Warble had six points, and Sarah O’Day added 5 points, 1 block and 1 steal.
Grace will hit the road on Saturday, playing at Bethel at 1 p.m.
Marian Men 82, Grace 74
Grace’s men’s basketball team could not pull off the upset of No. 18 Marian on Wednesday.
The Lancers fell 82-74 to the Knights, who committed just two turnovers in the game.
Grace is in the midst of a daunting slate of five straight ranked opponents. On Saturday Grace hosts archrival No. 11 Bethel at 1 p.m.
Grace shot 45 percent from the floor, slightly better than Marian’s 44 percent. But the Lancers made only 4 of 17 (24 percent) from beyond the arc.
Cade Gibbs battled his way to 16 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists to lead the Lancers (12-7, 5-5 Crossroads League).
The first half was a back-and-forth affair. The score was tied eight times in the half.
Grace opened up a 14-10 lead after a fastbreak basket by Haden Deaton.
The Knights (10-4, 6-4 CL) rallied in front with a 12-2 run, and Grace trailed 37-33 at halftime. Marian did not commit a turnover in the first half, allowing the hosts to take eight more field goal attempts. Conversely, Grace had seven turnovers as a team before halftime.
Grace, who had not made a 3-pointer before halftime, saw its shooting hit the mark shortly into the second half.
Cade Gibbs, Haden Deaton and Frankie Davidson each buried a 3-pointer in the first three minutes of the half. Two minutes later, Matt Jennings scored in the paint to put Grace ahead 48-47.
Unfortunately for the Lancers, Grace did not score again for nearly five minutes. The Knights seized an eight-point edge and never trailed again.
Grace continued to apply pressure on the Knights, slicing the margin down to three on a triple from Jakob Gibbs with 7:13 remaining.
But Grace again came up empty, hitting a three-minute drought which allowed Marian to regain composure.
The Knights sank 10 free throws over the final few minutes to ice the victory.
Jake Wadding finished 16 points and eight rebounds, and Deaton tallied 12 points.
Davidson notched 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assist and 1 block before fouling out, and Jakob Gibbs scored eight off the bench.
Elijah Malone finished with eight points and six rebounds, and Jennings chipped in six points and five assists.
