Thirty-Six Stop Signs Stolen Throughout La Porte County This Weekend
LA PORTE COUNTY — What some might think of as a harmless prank could have serious consequences.
In all, 36, stop signs in northeast La Porte County were stolen this weekend.
The sheriff’s office says the signs were taken in rural portions of the county late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
Some were removed at County Road 150, Emory Road and the St. Joseph and La Porte County line.
Crews are in the process of replacing all of those signs, but a captain with the sheriff’s office says it’s concerning that many were missing.
“It’s really frustrating,” said Derek Allen, La Porte County sheriff’s administrative captain. “It creates a serious traffic hazard for the motoring public. Those signs are there for a reason: To regulate traffic and the flow of traffic.”
If the department can come up with a case through criminal investigation, he says the people involved can be charged with theft. They could also face liabilities if the absent signs led to a crash.
