WINONA LAKE – Lakeland Christian Academy’s varsity girls basketball will begin its season with a new coach in Marc Miller.
“We are proud to have Marc move up to coach our varsity girls. The time and passion that he pours into the team is hands down unmatched, and I can see a difference in their play and enthusiasm to be a team,” says Nick Miller, unrelated, LCA board member and parent. “He is a true servant to the team and Lakeland.”
Miller has been with the LCA girls basketball program since 2014 starting with the elementary team, and then as head coach of the junior high team leading them to three winning seasons and three consecutive wins of their home tournament, the first since it began. Additionally, he has coached five years with the boys program. Prior to LCA, Miller spent three years coaching with various varsity boys basketball teams.
“One of the things I love about basketball is the ability to fail in a safe environment, and then, after putting in the hard work, the opportunity to succeed under pressure,” Marc Miller said. “It is a sport where things are earned, not given and provides valuable life lessons. I’m excited to coach this group of young ladies. It is a unique situation in the fact that I have worked with most of them since elementary school on the fundamentals of the game. The depth of talent and athleticism on this team opens up a lot of exciting possibilities for us this year.”
“Coach Marc is a dedicated and hard-working individual,” stated Derrik Hobbs, parent. “I know my daughters will walk away from their high school basketball experience with those life skills.”
Miller played four years of varsity basketball and received a scholarship to play at Goshen College before sustaining a career-ending injury prior to his first season. He is a veteran, having served in the US Army from 1993-95. Miller chose to further his education and graduated from Grace College with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and an MA in Ministry.
Taking over for Allison Kauffman, Miller will guide a team that has piled up double-digit wins in each of the past five seasons under Kauffman. Kauffman has moved over to Manchester High School, serving in Josh Troyer’s program as JV coach. Kauffman also coaches soccer for the Squires. A star basketball player in her own right at Grace College, Kauffman won 63 games in five seasons with the Cougars, reaching the sectional finals in 2018 for the first time in program history and winning the LCA Classic in the same season.
Miller takes over for LCA at the same time as the boys program also begins with a new head coach, Jake Ritchie, as it was announced earlier this year.
