Opposes Wawasee Referendum
Dear Editor,
On Nov. 3, we will vote on a referendum to approve a 51% tax increase for the Wawasee school district.
I attended the school board meeting on Tuesday. School administrators said because state budget cuts did not occur, they “do not need” $0.14 of the $0.285 per hundred tax increase requested in the referendum.
Yet, once given the authority, it is human nature for people to find ways to spend up to their authority.
In trying to address this concern, I asked school board members twice if they would provide a resolution or other form of assurance that they would not use the additional $0.14 in the future for reasons other than a state budget cut.
The board members refused to give any such assurance other than “trust us.”
Normally, trust has to be earned. If the school board members would have provided assurance on Tuesday, they could have gone a long way in earning that trust. Opportunity missed.
Please vote NO to this super-sized tax increase.
