WARSAW — Warsaw Community Schools is working to address the problem of students walking to school across SR 15.
Warsaw Community Schools Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education David Robertson spoke on the topic Tuesday, Oct. 13, during the Warsaw Community Schools’ Board of School Trustees’ work session at the Warsaw Community Schools Central Office Training Room.
“One thing I do want to remind … everyone is that all of our housing to the east of 15 is in a bus zone,” said Robertson. “That is not a walk zone, and we ask that families do not have their kids trek across 15 as they walk to either Washington, Edgewood or the high school.”
“We still have a handful of kids that do that pretty consistently and we’re asking that you work with transportation. We can get students picked up and get them home quickly. It’s not an issue of time, but we want to remind everyone that area specifically is a transportation zone even though it’s located in very close proximity to our schools. Normally everything that close to our schools is a walk zone; that is not a walk zone because of the danger of crossing the state highway.”
He noted there’s no crossing guard in that area because no one should be crossing the road there. The corporation is to send out a press release later this week on the issue, he said.
In other business, the board also:
- Heard from Robertson the corporation is planning to add two more crossing guards.
One is to monitor Union and Kincaid streets. Another is to be at the crosswalk near the trail from the high school to Edgewood. Both moves are because more students are walking in those areas.
- Heard about several grants the corporation received.
One is a Title III grant totaling $83,605. It’s to be used for helping English language learners in the corporation.
The board’s regular meeting is 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at Jefferson Elementary School.
