Darlene M. Welty
Darlene M. Welty, 91, formerly of South Whitley, died at 1:48 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, at Wellbrooke of Carmel Senior Living Community, where she had been a resident since 2014.
She was born March 16, 1929, in Wabash County, a daughter of the late Olin and Mable (Biehl) Lofland. She grew up in the Bippus area and graduated from Bippus High School in 1947.
On Nov. 14, 1948, she was united in marriage to Palmer Eugene Welty. They made their first home in Huntington, later moving to Big Barbee Lake. In 1997, the couple moved to South Whitley. Palmer died on Nov. 4, 2011. Darlene moved to Carmel in 2012 to be closer to family.
Her career employment was with Our Sunday Visitor, Huntington, where she was the office manager. The couple also owned and operated a dress shop in Pierceton in the 1970’s known as Welty’s Flair.
In her senior years, she liked to sing and actively made craft arts at her senior living community.
Surviving is a grandson, Justin (Lindsey) Welty of Carmel.
Additionally, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Welty, and sisters, Ledona Dennison, Norma Jean Sleighter, and Rosalee Shepherd.
A graveside service is 1 p.m. Friday at the South Whitley Cemetery. 7500 W St Rd 14, South Whitley. Arrangements are by Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.
