Every election season, we are tasked with choosing people to represent us. In an ideal world, we would judge candidates by qualities like intelligence, grasp of the issues and willingness to work across party lines for all people. Unfortunately that’s not what always happens. Instead, what are known as wedge issues are the only things that matter to some voters. Examples might include crime, national security and immigration. Perhaps the most divisive wedge issue is abortion.
Many Republicans would like you to think that they, and they alone oppose abortion. This is patently false. No one, Republican, Democrat, Independent thinks abortion is a good idea. How do people who support Trump because he claims to oppose abortion ignore the daily lies, the race baiting, and comments like grabbing women by the…? It’s hypocrisy, plain and simple.
Don’t allow Republicans to influence your vote by claiming they’re the only ones who oppose abortion. Democrats oppose it too. The difference lies in a woman’s right to choose what is best for her life. Republicans vehemently oppose government intervention, yet have no problem telling women what they can and cannot do with their bodies.
There are so many children in foster care who cannot find families, and there are millions of children living in poverty. Republicans continually vote against providing funds to help children in need, yet they want to force women to bring more children into the world that cannot be cared for.
Many Republicans have come to think they are better Christians because they oppose abortion. Who are they to judge? Republicans cannot be allowed to continue to claim falsely that they are the only ones who care about the sanctity of life. It’s time to stop using this issue to divide America.
