SYRACUSE — After the spring play “Beauty and the Beast” for the 2019-20 school year fell victim to the pandemic, it was decided to choose something “lighthearted and a comedy” for the fall play at Wawasee High School. “Puffs” is scheduled to be performed at 7 p.m. Oct. 9-10 and 2 p.m. Oct. 11 in the high school auditorium.
“Puffs” is written by Matt Cox with original music composed by Brian Hoes and is told from the perspective of school misfits who live in the basement, said Mindy Coblentz, assistant director for the play.
“It is seven years of a school of magic from the perspective of school misfits that live in the basement,” said Kristin Bonner, play director. “It is about defeating the ultimate evil wizard.”
According to a news release, “avid readers and movie goers might find this story familiar.” There are some sad moments, but mostly the play is a comedy. And “it is a story of human worth, friendship and bravery from the viewpoint of the most unlikely of heroes,” as stated in the news release.
“It’s something the kids enjoy and they know the story,” Bonner said. “It was written fairly recently.”
The set of “Beauty and the Beast” is being reused and touched up for the “Puffs” production.
This is the first time for Wawasee to do this production. Bonner and Coblentz emphasized they could not share more specific details due to a licensing agreement.
Chris Dykhuisen is the technical director.
Online ticket prices for adults and seniors are $10 and student tickets are $7. Seating is general admission and can be purchased online at wawaseeperformingarts.ludus.com/index.php or at the door if not sold out prior to show night.
