Vincent Earns Third Singles Title
NorthWood’s Ben Vincent held his end of the bargain, winning a No. 1 singles championship as the overall top seed at the Northern Lakes Conference Boys Tennis Championships.
Vincent, who won a pair of No. 2 singles titles as a sophomore and a junior, earned a No. 1 singles title Saturday as a senior. Vincent got a battle from Concord’s Bryson Schrock, but upheld his title run with a 6-3, 6-3 championship.
Also winning singles titles were Goshen’s Carlos Lichty, a 6-4, 7-6 (6) winner over Northridge’s Grant Martin, and Lichty’s teammate, Moses Sawatzky, a 6-3, 6-1 title taker over Plymouth’s Carter Snyder.
Northridge won the No. 1 doubles title and Concord took the No. 2 doubles title to close out the results as the two teams would split the NLC championship points. Concord, 7-0 in the round robin, scored 45 points in the tournament. Northridge, at 6-1, scored 47 points in the tourney to earn the split.
Goshen, NorthWood, Plymouth, Warsaw, Wawasee and Mishawaka concluded the order of the team standings.
Indiana Wesleyan Men 4, Grace 0
Grace’s men’s tennis team was unable to pull off the championship upset, losing to No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan 4-0 on Saturday morning.
The Lancers (11-2) took down No. 19 Marian in the semifinals of the Crossroads League Tournament on Thursday. But two days later, Grace came up short in the title bout with the Wildcats (11-0).
Max Rozas and Fabricio Galvan were defeated at No. 1 doubles by the score of 6-3, and Pavle Popovic and Ivan Antinori also lost 6-3.
Ramiro Candia and Mauricio Corty were ahead 4-3 at No. 2 doubles, but the match was cut short after the overall doubles’ point was secured by IWU.
The Wildcats quickly won at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles in straight sets to earn the tournament championship; IWU also earned an automatic bid to the NAIA Championships during the spring.
Next week, the Lancers will take on the ITA Regional Tournament. Rozas will aim to defend his ITA regional singles’ crown during the tournament.
