PIERCETON — Three people were taken to area hospitals after a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of US 30 and SR 13 on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
At 7:56 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a three-vehicle accident on West US 30, near South SR 13, Pierceton. Emerson C. Butts, 31, North CR 175E Lot 156, Warsaw, was traveling west on US 30 in a black 2008 Kia Sorento and was approaching SR 13 when, for an unknown reason, his vehicle struck two other vehicles.
Butts was unconscious at the time of the accident and was taken to Lutheran Fort Wayne for medical treatment. He was removed from his burning vehicle by passersby and was in serious condition at the time he was transported.
Mason J. Metzinger, 22, Deerfield Path, Warsaw, said traffic was starting to move through the intersection when his orange 2019 Ford Ranger was rear-ended by Butts’ vehicle. Metzinger complained of back pain and was taken to Parkview Hospital for medical treatment.
Maranda L. Taylor, 42, South Sycamore Street, Monterey, was driving a white 2017 Chevrolet Express and was preparing to turn left at US 30 and SR 13 when her vehicle was rear-ended. Taylor complained of pain to her knee, lower leg and foot area; she was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital.
A witness at the scene said she saw Butts’ vehicle pass her on US 30 at a high rate of speed approximately one mile before the crash scene.
Winona Lake Police Department, Warsaw Police Department, Pierceton Fire Department, Lutheran EMS and North Webster/Tippecanoe Township Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
Damages are estimated at up to $50,000.
