WINONA LAKE – On Monday morning, ESPN showcased the inspirational COVID marathon organized by Grace College’s men’s soccer team.
ESPN’s show Outside The Lines spent three minutes on the marathon, which the Lancers organized to raise funds for COVID-19 relief efforts.
ESPN host Ryan Smith interviewed Grace junior Tyler Brueckman during the three-minute segment. The segment recapped the impact for the marathon as well as the motivation behind it for the national audience.
Grace raised over $20,000 for COVID relief funds during the marathon, including Warsaw’s Salvation Army, World Health IMO and Elkhart County’s COVID-19 Community Response Fund. The team ran in shifts for seven consecutive days, using its student-athletes from several countries to run during the pandemic.
The event was originally scheduled to last for two days, but the outpouring of donations and community response was too good to cut short. So the Lancers continued to run around the clock and around the world to help others in need.
“At Grace we want to give back and use our abilities and gifts to give back to the people that need it,” Brueckman said during the ESPN interview. “This was the perfect opportunity and example of what we want to stand for.”
