Soccer Results: Sept. 12
Grace College Women 6, Point Park 0
Grace’s women’s soccer team enjoyed a goal spree on Saturday in the 2020 season opener.
The Lady Lancers topped Point Park 6-0 at 1st Source Bank Field in Grace’s only non-conference game of the fall.
Grace will quickly shift into Crossroads League play next week, starting with a home match against No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan on at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
JJ Aalbue scored two goals to lead Grace’s attack, and Brooke Kohler and Lea Moessinger each produced a goal and an assist.
It took Grace almost 40 minutes to get on the scoreboard on Saturday. But once the Lady Lancers started scoring, they never stopped.
Grace held a dominant 16-0 advantage in shot attempts in the first half, but the Lady Lancers only led 1-0 at halftime.
Grace applied pressure to the Pioneers’ backline almost immediately on Saturday, peppering Point Park’s goal with shots.
Aalbue and Alexis Larimore both had shots that bounced off the goal post before halftime, but it wouldn’t be long before Grace scored.
A handball from Point Park gave Grace a free kick, and Aalbue scored on a set piece in the 39th minute, assisted by Moessinger.
Grace’s second goal came four minutes into the second half. Kohler swung a dangerous cross into the penalty box, and Larimore connected to give Grace a 2-0 lead.
In the 62nd minute, Grace scored again. Madison Tuma won possession deep in PPU’s territory, quickly passing the ball to Aalbue. Aalbue needed just one touch to slice the ball into the far corner of the net.
In the 78th minute, Adelee Gartner made a clever move in the middle of the field and found Tuma in the penalty box. Tuma was fouled, and Moessinger converted the penalty kick.
Grace added two more goals in the final five minutes. The first was scored by Taylor Binkerd, who blasted her shot into the goal after a cross by Liz Aalbue.
The sixth and final goal was one of the most memorable. Kohler scored on a free kick, beating the goalkeeper from 28 yards away from the goal.
For the game, Grace held a 30-2 edge in shots. Goalkeeper Bethany Blackwood needed to stop two shots to record her shutout.
NorthWood Girls 6, Jimtown 0
In a battle of non-conference Elkhart County schools, NorthWood pitched a shutout against the ladies from Baugo. NorthWood super sophomores Ari Topping and Caitlin Knepp each potted two goals, with Topping adding one assist and Knepp helping on two.
Juniors Fatima Ghaffar and Morgan Jenkins each added a goal while senior Brenin Knight and freshman Callie Johnson were each credited with an assist.
The Panthers moves to 2-4 on the season and will have a busy week with matches at Bethany Christian and Mishawaka and home dates with Goshen and Elkhart before the week comes to an end
Lakewood Christian Academy Boys 0, Caston 0
The #14 (1A) Lakeland Christian Academy Cougars took to their home pitch Caston on Saturday afternoon, playing 80 minutes of scoreless soccer.
LCA held the shot advantage 10-6, with goalies Peter Koller and David Plastow combining on the Cougar shutout.
“It was good to get a shutout today, but I’m disappointed that we didn’t finish off the opportunities we created,” said LCA coach Nat Raber. “Hunter Rice and Nate Reimink both played really well in midfield today.”
The draw left LCA with a 5-3-2 record. They will return to the pitch at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Winona Lake.
Fishers Girls 1, Warsaw 0
For 78 minutes, the Warsaw Lady Tigers and their #11 (3A) hosts from Fishers played a chess match that looked like it might end in a stalemate. Both teams played with caution and entered halftime with no score.
The second half brought more of the same, according to Warsaw skipper Jon Hoover. Warsaw and Fishers made attempts to be strategic in their attacks. With five minutes remaining, Warsaw was awarded a free kick just outside the corner of the box, but Audrey Grimm’s shot went wide. With two minutes left on the clock, Fishers was awarded a corner kick and capitalized on the opportunity, breaking the 0-0 tie and giving the home team the victory.
Kierstin Parker had a strong day in goal, finishing with four saves and shutting down a key breakaway in the first half. Warsaw falls to 6-4, including an unblemished 5-0 in the NLC. They will be back in action on Monday as they travel to Fort Wayne for a match with Northrop.
