Triton Wins Own Invite
Turns out some home cookin’ was all Triton needed.
A big win Thursday night against Tippecanoe Valley propelled Triton into its home tournament on Saturday, and the Trojans ran through all four of its opponents to claim the team title.
Triton beat Caston and Culver in straight sets, then put out Bremen 18-25, 25-10, 15-8 to secure the group. John Glenn went 3-0 in the opposite pool, setting up the final, to which Triton exacted some revenge on Glenn from a mid-August loss with a 25-17, 25-18 championship finish.
Stat leaders for Triton (11-4) on the day included Addyson Viers with 30 kills, Abbey Viers with 27 kills and eight blocks, Lexia Hostrawser with 21 kills, four aces and four blocks, Emma Hepler with 77 assists, Molly McFarland with 36 dig and Madeline Doll with five aces.
NorthWood 1-2 At Concord Tourney
NorthWood came back to earth a bit after a tough day at the Concord Invite.
After winning its last nine contests, the Red Slam dropped its first match to Plymouth 25-13, 25-21, rallied to beat West Noble 25-9, 25-17, but couldn’t catch New Prairie 27-25, 25-19 to fall out of the pool.
Stat leaders for NorthWood (10-3) included Ali Knepp with 22 total kills, Kendal Miller with 57 combined assists, Annika Bennett with a total of six aces and 12 assists, and Macy Lengacher with 21 digs against New Prairie.
Warsaw Takes Three At LaPorte
Chalk up another three wins for Warsaw after its showing at the LaPorte Tournament.
Warsaw garnered wins over Northridge 25-10, 25-19, South Bend St. Joe 26-24, 25-20, and Valpo 25-22, 19-25, 15-12, but dropped its contest with Elkhart 25-21, 25-19.
Stat leaders for Warsaw (14-6) included Kennedy Lauck with 24 kills and four aces, Kaylee Weeks with 20 kills and four digs, Kylie Smith with 47 digs and five aces, Abbie Porter with 20 digs and five aces, Liz Schmidt with 23 digs and Avery Hales 95 assists, 19 digs and 12 kills.
Warsaw’s JV competed at Michigan City, going 1-2 with losses to Penn and Valpo and a win over Kankakee Valley. Clara Porter had 24 assists, 17 kills and six aces, Tessa Graney had 36 assists and Sadie Walden added 20 digs and six aces.
The Warsaw freshman team ran through its four games at LaPorte, taking the team title. Warsaw beat Woodlan, Fairfield and Homestead before knocking off Carroll 25-24, 25-19 to finish the day. Tournament MVP Leah Henderson had 10 digs and eight kills in the Homestead win and five kills against Woodlan. Claire Reichenbach added 64 assists on the day as Warsaw moves to 15-0 on the season.
Grace 3, St. Francis 1
The match was Grace’s home opener, knocking off the Cougars who are receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll.
The Lady Lancers (3-0, 3-0 Crossroads League) impressed defensively, limiting the Cougars (0-2, 0-2 CL) to a .099 hitting percentage as a team.
Makaela Lochmueller was nearly unstoppable on both sides of the net. The junior had 15 kills and zero errors for an attack percentage of .625, and she also added one solo block and five block assists.
USF stunned Grace to start the match, winning six of the first seven points. The Lady Lancers recovered with four straight points and regained the lead midway into the set.
Grace held a slight 20-19 edge in the final stages. Lochmueller and Cassadi Colbert produced kills on back-to-back possessions to give Grace breathing room, and Colbert ended the set 25-21 with a kill.
The second set was a picture of efficiency for Grace. The Lady Lancers pounded out 14 kills and two errors in the set (.444 percentage), waltzing off to a 25-12 win.
The Cougars refused to be swept, however. USF took advantage of 11 Grace errors in the third set to win 25-18.
The fourth set featured four critical runs. The first run went to USF, who rode its momentum to a 5-1 lead. Grace quickly countered with five unanswered points, including a block and a kill by Anna Frey.
The Cougars tried to surge ahead again with a 7-1 run, resulting in a 16-12 lead. But again Grace had a decisive answer.
The Lady Lancers unleashed a timely 8-1 run, changing a 19-15 deficit into a 22-20 lead. Lochmueller tallied three kills during that run, and Frey added a kill and an ace.
Paige Eakright sparked Grace late off the bench. The senior had three kills in the final set, including scoring Grace’s 23rd and 25th points in the 25-23 victory.
Frey had a strong performance, amassing 9 kills, 19 digs, 3 block assists and 2 aces. Harrington stuffed the stat sheet with 38 assists, 9 digs, 4 kills and 2 block assists.
Colbert finished with 10 kills, and Makayla Bell chipped in five kills and three block assists.
Julia Nagy led all players with 23 digs. Grace’s back row alongside Nagy shined, including 12 digs by Brittany Baize and 10 digs from Gina Novotny.
The Lady Lancers remain at home Wednesday, taking on No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
