WINONA LAKE – At the age of 89, George Hemmingsen’s vision is blurry and his hearing is probably even less dependable, but you can bet he saw the cluster of 70 colorful balloons and heard the whoops of excitement from his family Saturday, Aug. 8.
George and Evelyn Hemmingsen were the focus of adulation Saturday outside their home at Grace Village Assisted Living facility in Winona Lake when their family organized a surprise parade for the couple’s 70th anniversary.
More than a dozen vehicles drove up to the entrance where the couple was seated. Many brought signs with them.
The party ended with family members releasing 70 balloons into the air.
The parade was organized since the limitations on visitations remain in place as a result of the pandemic.
“They are missing being able to see family the most. But Grace Village has taken exceptional care of them,” said Linda Goshert, who helped organize the parade.
