George Marrs Young
George Marrs Young, Warsaw, went home to be with the Lord from his residence at 9:36 p.m. on Monday, July 20, at the age of 86.
He was born on Jan. 24, 1934, in Hesland, Ky. to Jewell (Bailey) Young and Arthur Young. George grew up in the hills of Kentucky and graduated from Rossville High School in Indiana. His family had moved to Lafayette in search of jobs. He worked with his Dad doing floor coverings in most of the buildings of Purdue University.
Music had always been a part of George’s life. He picked up the guitar at 8 years old. He played by ear and sang with his dad and uncles.
In 1964, he met Waunita Mabry Montgomery. The story goes that she “fell in love with his guitar BEFORE she fell in love with him.” To this day he still has that same Gibson. They were married on April 16, 1966, and they shared 55 years of marriage together before he passed away.
Together they moved to Warsaw in 1968 in hopes of going to Grace College. God’s plans are not always our plans, and George never attended school. They loved the Warsaw community where he had a carpet store and installed flooring in the area for the next 40 years.
Music was a huge part of their lives, it was said that “When he got saved, his guitar got saved as well.” George and Waunita spent years ministering to others doing country and gospel programs in churches, nursing homes and various other venues. Over the years, many musicians have spent hours learning from George. Every Thursday you could find George and Waunita at Grace Village Retirement Community as they were involved for over 17 years with Grace Village Jam.
George was known as a kind and gentle man. He was loved and respected in the community. A humble man of integrity….he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife: Waunita Young, Warsaw; two sons: Jeff (Laura) Young, West Lafayette, and Darren (Brigette) Young, Warsaw; and four daughters: Debbie (John) Crawford, Carmel, Becky Stubbs, Champagne, Ill., Teena Nichols, Warsaw, and Dianna Young, Warsaw. Also surviving are his 11 grandchildren: Evan, Noel, Brenden, Cameron, Garrett, Tonya, Aaron, Adam, Hannah, Jodie and Makenna; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Truman Young, one sister, Maxine Berry, and two great-granddaughters, Tosha and Saige.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate George’s life at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, 2020, at Dutchtown Brethren Church, 4057 East 300 N., Warsaw, and officiated by Pastor Dave Stockland. Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home in Warsaw is in charge of arrangements.
