Fredrick Dean Hershberger — UPDATED
Fredrick Dean Hershberger, 82, Elkhart, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2020. He was born on July 10, 1937 to his late mother, Francis Evelyn (Kaylor) Neff.
Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Andrea (Riffe) Hershberger; daughters Betsy Hershberger (Brian Habic) of Elkhart; Jennifer (Todd) Crist of Granger; son Fred (Whitney) Hershberger Jr. of Syracuse; eight grandchildren, Brysen Habic, Camron Erb, Conner Sowders, Zac Hershberger, Maria Mohan, Kayla Hershberger, Johnny Mohan, Camille Crist; and six great grandchildren.
Fred was a three-sport athlete (basketball, baseball, track) at Milford High School, Class 1957. After Graduation, Fred enlisted to proudly serve in the United States Army as a Screaming Eagle in the 101st Airborne Division as part of the Command and Control Battalion. While serving his country, Fred was part of the boxing team. After Service, he started a local boxing club, coaching. Continuing to participate in basketball and coaching throughout his years, he also enjoyed cliff/high meter diving. Fred supported his children and grandchildren, putting them first in everything. In his later years he enjoyed golf, fishing, and being out on his pontoon with family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, July 24, (masks required), with services at 1 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. Immediately following services, Military Honors will be at Prairie Street Cemetery Veteran Towers. Donations may be given to the Center for Hospice in Elkhart and The Wounded Warriors Project, P.O.
