Herman E. Conley
Herman E. Conley passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 27, 2020, in Etna Green, at the age of 88.
He was born on April 27, 1932, in Swamp Branch, Ky. Herman was the second oldest of sixteen children born to Lana Frances (May) Conley and Bertie Conley. On June 15, 1957, he was married to Nellie D. (Long) Conley. They shared 52 years of marriage together before she passed away on Oct. 14, 2009.
He was a 1952 graduate of Pierceton High School where he excelled at basketball and earned the nickname “Goose”. He loved all sports and was a member of the Pierceton High School track and cross country teams. Herman made Etna Green, Indiana his home and was the town barber for over 40 years. He cut hair and swapped many stories daily with clientele that he would befriend. He moved in 1989 to Tucson, where he continued to barber for a total of 65 years. Herman will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and will be dearly missed.
He will be lovingly remembered by his three daughters: Colleen Conley Mast, South Bend; Melanie Stenstrom and her boyfriend, Todd Hahn, Etna Green; Becky (Don) Milliser, Tucson, Ariz.; and two sons: Jim (Misha) Conley, Etna Green; Patrick (Martha) Conley, Plymouth. He also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren: Justin, Sara, Athena, Andrew, Alaina, Taylor, Blake, Trenton, Maci, Cole, Jami, Nick, Addam, Toni, and Donna; eighteen great-grandchildren: Carter, Presley, Macy, Harper, Gracie, Graciabelle, Fitzgerald, Kavanaugh, Finnigan, O’Malley, Coby, Lucy, Isaac, Katie, Mat, Harlie, Gabe and Landon; and his great-great-granddaughter, Olivia. Also surviving are six brothers: Roger Conley, Warsaw; John (Neva) Conley, Warsaw; Robert “Bob” (Sue) Conley, Warsaw; Ruben (Peg) Conley, Etna Green; Dan Conley, Fort Wayne; Mark Conley, Columbus, Ga.; and three sisters: Nita Cunningham, Dayton, Ohio; Joan Potter, Pierceton; Deb Conley, South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nellie D. Conley, four brothers, Woodford, Bobby, Ernie and Ronald Conley, two sisters, Geraldine Bodas and Wilma Jane, and his grandson, Darek Long.
Visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw.
Due to the current guidelines limiting public gatherings because of the COVID-19 virus and safety concerns, please use good judgment in determining the length of your visit or if you should attend. Masks should be worn if you feel more comfortable doing so, they are highly recommended for the visitation and service but are not required. There will be no congregating in the parking lot and physical distancing of six feet is mandatory.
Herman’s life will be celebrated with a service 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, at Etna Green Church of Christ, 206 W. Broadway Street, Etna Green Indiana and officiated by Pastor Jordan Ickes. Burial will follow with a graveside service at Etna Green Cemetery in Etna Green. Please follow social distancing guidelines at the cemetery as well.
