Poll Worker Incident
Dear Editor,
I have just read the reporting by the Warsaw Times-Union and InkFreeNews regarding a serious incident that happened at one of the polling locations on Tuesday. A white male inspector made a demeaning comment regarding a black female poll worker.
At the time, the other poll workers who were in the vicinity did not speak up. I have recruited and coordinated the Democrat poll workers in Kosciusko County since early 2018. Unfortunately, this is not the only time I have heard that a poll worker has made a demeaning or disrespectful comment regarding another poll worker or voter or practiced electioneering at the polling location.
I am glad Republican Chair Mike Ragan has spoken up, and I hope he continues to speak up in the community against racism.
I would like to personally thank the vast majority of the poll workers who worked for 14 hours at very low pay to serve on a bipartisan team to facilitate our democratic system. The election came at a time when coronavirus cases in our county were escalating and many veteran poll workers of both parties declined to serve for this election. I would particularly like to thank our high school and college young people as well as new poll workers who chose to serve for both parties.
